A holistic approach to health and well-being, rooted in the ancient Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda.

An Ayurvedic lifestyle emphasises balancing the mind, body, and spirit through daily routines, diet, exercise, and mindfulness practices tailored to an individual’s unique constitution, or dosha.

Understanding Doshas

Ayurveda identifies three doshas that govern an individual's physical and mental makeup.


  • Vata (Air + Ether): Creative, energetic, but prone to anxiety.
  • Pitta (Fire + Water): Ambitious, focused, but can become irritable or overworked.
  • Kapha (Earth + Water): Calm, nurturing, but can be lethargic or resistant to change.


A person's dominant dosha(s) determine the most suitable lifestyle practices for them. Understanding your dosha can guide choices in diet, exercise, and routines.

  • Prakriti: Your unique constitution, determined at birth, which reflects your natural dosha dominance.
  • Agni (Digestive Fire): Healthy digestion is central to Ayurveda. It ensures proper assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.
  • Ama (Toxins): Undigested food and experiences can create toxic buildup. Detoxification is key to maintaining balance.
Core Elements of an Ayurvedic Lifestyle


  1. Dinacharya (Daily Routine)
    • Morning Practices:
      • Wake up early, preferably before sunrise.
      • Cleanse the body with tongue scraping and oil pulling.
      • Drink warm water with lemon to aid digestion.
      • Practice light exercise, yoga, or pranayama (breathing exercises).
      • Meditate for mental clarity.
    • Daytime Practices:
      • Eat meals at consistent times, with lunch being the heaviest meal.
      • Choose activities that balance your dosha (e.g., calming activities for Vata, cooling for Pitta, energizing for Kapha).
    • Evening Practices:
      • Avoid heavy meals or stimulating activities after sunset.
      • Engage in calming rituals like journaling, reading, or light yoga.
      • Sleep early.
  2. Diet
    • Eat according to an individual's dosha:
      • Vata: Warm, moist, grounding foods like soups, stews, root vegetables, and cooked grains.
      • Pitta: Cooling and hydrating foods like cucumbers, leafy greens, and sweet fruits.
      • Kapha: Light, dry, and spicy foods to reduce heaviness, like lentils, quinoa, and ginger to stimulate digestion.
    • Incorporate seasonal and freshly prepared meals.
    • Avoid processed foods, excessive caffeine, and eating when stressed.
    • Mindful Eating:
      • Eat in a calm environment without distractions.
      • Chew food thoroughly and savor each bite.
  3. Exercise
    • Tailor exercise to an individual's dosha:
        • Vata: Gentle, grounding activities like walking or yin yoga.
        • Pitta: Moderate-intensity workouts, swimming, or cycling.
        • Kapha: Vigorous activities like running or strength training.
    • Breathing Exercises (Pranayama): Practice techniques such as Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) for balance.
  4. Mindfulness & Meditation
    • Regular meditation promotes mental clarity and emotional balance.
    • Practice gratitude, affirmations, or visualisation to align with your intentions.
  5. Herbal Remedies
    • Use Ayurvedic herbs to support health.
      • Ashwagandha: For stress and energy.
      • Triphala: For digestion and detoxification.
      • Turmeric: For inflammation and immunity.
    • Therapies
      • Shirodhara: Warm oil poured on the forehead for mental clarity.
      • Panchakarma: A cleansing and rejuvenation therapy to remove toxins.
    • Aromatherapy
      • Essential oils like sandalwood, frankincense, and vetiver for emotional balance.
    • Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to customise herbal supplements.
  6. Sleep Hygiene
    • Maintain consistent sleep patterns.
    • Create a calming bedtime environment with dim lighting and soothing aromas.
